# Skald > Skald is AI traffic analytics read from a website's own server access log. It counts people, AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity), search engines, crawlers and bots, ties leads and sales to the visit that brought them, and counts every figure twice. Self-hosted with Docker, or hosted. Source-available under the Elastic License 2.0. Every link below is Markdown. The same page is HTML at the URL without `.md` (`/docs/api.md` is `/docs/api/`). ## Docs - [Getting started](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/getting-started.md): What Skald counts, how the sections and tabs are laid out, and how to choose a period, filter, drill down, compare and export. - [Docker: first install in 10 minutes](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/docker-first-install.md): From nothing to a working dashboard on a server that already runs your website with nginx: run the container, sign in, fill the last 14 days, check it with the doctor, then add the script tag and hooks. - [Pick your road](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/pick-your-road.md): Which way your site's leads, bookings and payments should reach Skald, by the kind of site you run: what each road gives you, what it cannot see, and what to set. - [Sign-in and team](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/sign-in-and-team.md): How to sign in, keep your account safe with two-step sign-in, and invite your team with the right role. - [Real time: who is on your site now](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/real-time.md): See how many people are on your site right now, where they are on a world map, what they are reading, and which AI assistants and crawlers are fetching pages at this moment. This guide covers where it is, what each figure means, and how fresh it is. - [Where visitors come from, and their journeys](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/where-visitors-come-from.md): Most visits say Direct: the browser sent no referrer. Many of them are people coming back, who first found you through a search, an AI assistant or a post days before. This guide covers how Skald finds a visitor's first visit, where you see it, and the visitor drawer with every visit of one visitor. - [Retention: who came back](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/retention.md): Traffic › Retention answers one question: of the visitors first seen in a week, how many came back in each week after? Or by day: of those first seen on a day, how many came back each day after. Like the retention reports in Google Analytics 4 or PostHog, with Skald's rules: every figure is counted twice, and what Skald cannot know is said, never shown as 0. - [Internal traffic: leave your own visits out](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/internal-traffic.md): Tell Skald which internet addresses belong to you and your team, so your own visits do not count as visitors. This guide covers adding your address, adding a range by hand, pausing one while you test, editing and deleting one, and what changes in the figures. - [Leads and conversions](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/leads-and-conversions.md): Where Skald's leads and conversions come from, what the Leads & sales section shows, what "abandoned" means, and how to see every lead and conversion the figures leave out. The Leads tab lists every lead of a period, one row each; owners and admins see each lead's name and email there, when your site keeps them. - [The tracking script](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/tracking-script.md): How to add Skald's one-line skald.js tag to your pages, what it sees, what it never collects, and how to check that it works. - [Webhooks](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/webhooks.md): How to connect Calendly, Cal.com, HubSpot, Typeform, Stripe, Zapier, Make and your own site to Skald, so bookings, forms and payments show under Leads & sales. Also how Skald can send conversions out to your CRM. - [Send leads from your backend in 5 minutes](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/leads-from-your-backend.md): Your site's server tells Skald each time a lead is made. The quick way: download one file and call one function after your form is saved. WordPress needs no code at all: a plugin does it. The rest of this guide has the details the file does for you (the body, the signature, retries), for anyone who wants to write it themselves. - [Demo bookings](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/demo-bookings.md): How booked calls from Calendly and Cal.com reach Skald, what each way can see, and how to keep only your own event types when one account books for several businesses. - [Funnels and goals](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/funnels-and-goals.md): How to build a funnel of pages and events, save it and read its history, how goals work on the Events tab, and how to find badly tagged campaign links. - [AI & bots: what each crawler costs](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/ai-and-bots.md): See which AI assistants, search engines and bots fetch your site, how much work each one makes for your server, and what one of them did in detail. This guide covers the cost table, the detail view, and what each figure means. - [AI & bots: crawl health](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/crawl-health.md): See which of your pages Google, Bing and each AI crawler actually fetch, which they never reach, which pages they fetch that your sitemap does not list, and the pages that answer crawlers with an error, a redirect, slowly or with a large body. All of it comes from your server log, set beside your own sitemap. - [AI answers: what assistants say about you](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/ai-answers.md): See what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude answer when someone asks the questions your buyers ask, whether they name you, which of your pages they cite and which competitors they name. Then follow one citation through what only Skald sees: the assistant reading your page, the visitors it sent, and the leads that followed. This guide covers setting it up, tracking profiles, what each figure means, and what it costs. - [Connections: send, read and connect](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/connections.md): Settings > Connections is where a site's visits reach Skald from another server, a script reads your figures, and an AI assistant connects. This guide covers the three set-up dialogs, how to test each one, your tokens, and adding a site step by step, by one line to your AI agent or by hand. - [The read-only API](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/api.md): Every figure Skald shows is also a JSON file that a script, a spreadsheet or another tool can read with a token. This guide covers tokens, scopes, the addresses to call, and what the answers look like. - [Ask an AI assistant about your traffic (MCP)](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/mcp.md): Connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant to Skald, so you can ask about your traffic in plain words. This guide covers the address to use, the token it needs, setup for each assistant, and what it can and cannot see. - [If a connection does not work](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/troubleshooting-connections.md): What to do when a site's visits do not reach Skald, or a script or an AI assistant cannot connect. This guide covers skald-ship-check, the common problems, and what every answer of a Test means. - [Settings and retention](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/settings-and-retention.md): What each settings page does, who may change it, and how long Skald keeps each kind of detail. - [Client reports](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/client-reports.md): Branded reports for your clients: a mail with a PDF attached, sent on a schedule you set, with your agency's name, colour and logo. - [Privacy](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/privacy.md): What Skald keeps about the people who visit, who can see it, for how long, and how a person is removed when they ask. - [FAQ](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/faq.md): Short answers to the questions people ask most about Skald's figures, privacy and data. - [Search: queries, impressions and position from Google and Bing](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/search.md): Your server log cannot see a search. It never knows what someone typed, how often your page was shown, or where it ranked. Only the search engine knows. Skald syncs these figures from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, every 6 hours, and shows them on Traffic › Search, beside the visits Skald counted itself. This guide covers connecting them, what the tab shows, and why Google's clicks and Skald's visits never quite match. - [Security: scanners, exposures and attack attempts](https://skaldanalytics.com/docs/security.md): See who probes your server for files and panels it does not have, whether the server ever handed one of them a real file, what else they tried, and which addresses to block. All of it comes from your server log, the same lines every other figure is counted from. ## Product pages - [AI Traffic Analytics From Your Server Log](https://skaldanalytics.com/index.md): See what AI does with your site: which assistants read your pages, which answers cite you, who they send and who becomes a lead.
