SkaldEvery visit, truly told.

Compare · eight tools, one question at a time

Skald alternatives and comparisons: pick by the question you need answered

Skald alternatives and comparisons, one tool per page. Each page says what the other tool does better, what the server log adds, and when to keep both. Most sites need more than one of these.

Skald alternatives and comparisons is our side-by-side reading of eight tools that count a site's traffic or search: Google Analytics 4, Plausible, Matomo, PostHog, GoAccess, Cloudflare Web Analytics, Known Agents and Search Console. Every cell comes from the tool's own docs, read in October 2026. Where its docs did not say, we say so.

Pick the tool you are weighing

Each one does something better than Skald. Each answer says what, and what the server log adds beside it.

Google Analytics 4

Keep it for clicks, scrolls, funnels with in-page steps, ad spend and the Google Ads link.

Add Skald for AI crawlers and live fetches, visitors who block the tag or decline cookies, and figures counted twice.

[02] who should use what

Pick by the question, not the brand

Most sites need more than one of these. Here is which tool answers which question best.

  1. What people searched, and where you rank

Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Only they hold the search engine's own data.

  2. Clicks, scrolls, funnels and ad spend

Google Analytics 4 and PostHog. A script in the page sees what a server log cannot.

  3. Simple visitor counts on any host

Plausible. One snippet, and it works where you cannot read the server's log.

  4. Charging AI crawlers

Cloudflare, with pay per crawl. Skald blocks crawlers, per assistant or only their training crawlers, but does not charge.

  5. A one-off report from a log file

GoAccess. Free, MIT licence, nothing to set up in the page.

  6. Every visitor, crawler and AI fetch, checked

Skald, on your own server. It sits beside the tools above.

Five questions, nine tools

The short version. Each tool's own page has the full table, with every answer it gives better than Skald.

Nine tools compared on five questions: how each collects, whether it sees AI training crawlers, checks crawler names, runs on your own server, and checks its totals

What each tool is built to do, as we read their own docs in October 2026. "Not confirmed" means its own docs did not say. If we have yours wrong, tell us.

[04] keep your tool

Keep the tool you have. Add Skald beside it.

Skald reads your server's log, so it gets in the way of nothing: not a script tag, not a CDN, not a search console. Run both for 30 days and read them together.

What these pages do not cover

  • Prices. Each tool's own pricing page is the place to check; ours is on the pricing page.
  • Tools we checked but gave no page yet, such as Fathom, Umami and AWStats.
  • Anything a tool's own docs did not say. Those cells say "Not confirmed".
  • Tools change. We read their docs in October 2026.

questions

Skald alternatives and comparisons FAQ

Straight answers, including what Skald does not do.

Is Skald a replacement for Google Analytics?

For some sites, yes; for many, it sits beside it. Skald has no ad spend or Google Ads link, and a script in the page sees clicks and scrolls a log cannot. Skald sees the crawlers, AI fetches and blocked visitors a script never does. Google Analytics alternative.

Where do these comparisons come from?

From each tool's own docs and pricing pages, read in October 2026. A cell its docs did not settle says so; we never fill a gap with a guess. If we have a tool wrong, tell us through the contact page and we fix it.

Which tools does Skald work beside?

All of them. It reads your server's log, so nothing it does gets in the way of a script tag, a CDN or a search console. It syncs Search Console and Bing every 6 hours.

Why are some tools missing?

We compare only tools we have checked against their own docs. We checked a few more, such as Fathom, Umami and AWStats, but gave them no page yet.

What does Skald do that none of these do?

Every request is sorted into five groups that add up to the log, every figure is counted a second way, and a day that fails is withheld. It also checks crawlers against their owners' published addresses and files the fakes apart.
