Skald vs Matomo: both self-host, one is built on the log
Skald vs Matomo is a choice between a suite and a specialist. Matomo does a bit of everything with a tag or a log import. Skald reads your server's log every day and files each AI crawler, fetch and scanner by what it is.
Skald vs Matomo compares two analytics tools you can run on your own server. Matomo counts with a JavaScript tag, or imports server logs through its importer. Skald reads the access log your server already writes, sorts every request into five groups that add up to the log, and counts every figure twice.

What do you need to know? pick one
AI and machines: Matomo answers 4 of these 7 in part, through integrations or a log import with --enable-bots, and none in full. Skald answers all 7 from your server log.

[02] to be fair
Where Matomo does more than Skald
Matomo is a self-hosted suite that does a bit of everything. Here is where it is the better pick.
A tag and a log import
One tool covers both kinds of host: its JavaScript tag works where there is no log, and its importer reads logs where there is one. Skald needs a log to see machines.
A GPL licence
Matomo is GPL, with a cloud as well. Skald is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0: free to self-host, but hosting it for others needs a licence.
Visitor tools in the dashboard
Matomo lists GDPR tools among its features. In Skald, deleting one person is one command your server admin runs, not a dashboard button.
[03] built on the log
What Skald does with a server log that an importer does not
Importing a log turns lines into visits. Skald reads every line every day, and also asks who each machine is and whether the figures add up.
Five groups
People, AI assistants, search engines, bots and scanners, your own traffic. Together they add up to the log.
Names checked
A crawler's address is checked against what its owner publishes. A fake is filed as "claims to be GPTBot".
Why the AI came
Training crawl, live fetch, click-through. Three reasons, never added together.
Counted twice
A second, separate count checks every figure. A day that does not agree is withheld.
[04] use both
Keep Matomo for its suite, add Skald for the log
Skald needs nothing in your pages, so it never touches Matomo's tag. Each answers its own questions.
Keep Matomo for
A tag on hosts with no log, the reports and plugins your team already uses, and its GDPR tools.
Add Skald for
Every AI crawler and live fetch, crawler rules and crawl health, who is probing your server, and leads joined to their pages.
Trust the numbers
Every Skald figure adds up to the log and is counted twice, so a missing day says so instead of drawing 0.
[05] choose by the question
Matomo, Skald, or both
- "One self-hosted suite, with a tag and a log import." Matomo.
- "Every crawler and AI fetch, named and checked." Skald.
- "Block training crawlers but stay in AI answers." Skald's crawler rules.
- "A one-off report from a log file." GoAccess.
What it does not do
- Without a server or CDN log, Skald sees people only, through its script tag: no AI crawlers, fetchers or bots.
- Crawler rules work by the name a crawler sends, through your web server. A scraper behind a browser name is not stopped.
- Deleting a person is a command your server admin runs, not a dashboard button.
- Visits are an upper bound on people, never an exact count of humans.

Skald vs Matomo FAQ
Straight answers, including what Skald does not do.
Can Matomo read server logs?
Yes. As we read Matomo's own docs in October 2026, its log analytics importer reads server logs, and counts bots only when you run it with --enable-bots. Skald is built on the log: it reads every line, every day, and sorts people, AI assistants, search engines, bots and your own traffic apart.
Does Matomo show AI crawlers like GPTBot?
In part. Matomo's AI Chatbots report needs a Cloudflare, CloudFront or WordPress integration, or a log import with --enable-bots. Skald shows every AI crawler from the log, checks it against its owner's published addresses where they exist, and keeps training crawls, live fetches and click-throughs apart.
Is Skald a Matomo alternative?
For log-based counting, AI traffic and security from the log, yes. If you want one suite with a tag, a log importer and a cloud option, Matomo may suit you better. Some sites run both.
Are both free to self-host?
Yes. Matomo is GPL. Skald is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0 and free to self-host, for your own sites or your clients' sites. Offering Skald itself to others as a hosted service needs a commercial licence.
Which needs paid add-ons?
In Matomo, by its own pages, funnels, cohorts and search keywords are paid add-ons or plugins. Skald's free self-hosted install includes funnels, retention cohorts and the Search Console sync.
How does deleting one visitor work in each?
Matomo lists GDPR tools among its features. In Skald, your server admin runs one command that removes a person by IP address, email or visitor ID everywhere Skald keeps them.
