Website analytics for small business: one site, one dashboard, nothing to add to your pages

Website analytics for small business should answer four plain questions without a tag manager: who came, where from, is AI reading the site, and who got in touch.

Website analytics for small business means knowing who visits your site, where they came from and who became a customer, without a team to run it. Skald reads your web server's own log, so there is nothing to add to your pages, and visitors who decline the cookie banner are still counted. See server log analytics.

Skald Overview for today with sample data: visitors so far, against yesterday at this hour, and what visitors are doing now
Sample data. Overview, today, live.

[01] who really came

Who visits your website: five groups, never mixed

Every line of your server's log lands in exactly one group. People are counted as visits. Machines are counted as requests, in their own place, so a busy crawler never looks like a busy day. Part of AI traffic analytics by role.

212 visits

Real browsers that loaded your page's own files. Counted as visits: at most this many people, never more. Shown with where they came from and the pages they read.

Sample data. Visits and requests are different units, so the groups are never added into one total.

[02] where Skald began

Built for our own small-business website first

Skald began on Space-O's own small-business site. More people now ask an AI assistant before they find a business, and our analytics could not tell us whether that was happening to us.

Not because it was set up badly. A script tag only runs in a browser, and AI assistants never run it. So Rakesh Patel, CEO of Space-O Technologies, built a tool that reads the one record that sees every visit: the server's own log.

Three plain questions we could not answer

  1. Is ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity reading our pages?

The log shows each one, page by page.

  2. Does it fetch our page while answering someone?

A live fetch means a person was waiting for that answer.

  3. Do the people it cites click through?

They arrive as people, with the assistant as their source.

[03] your morning

Small business website traffic, in two minutes a day

The dashboard opens on today so far, redrawn every 2 minutes, set against yesterday at the same hour. The rest comes to your inbox.

  1. Today, live

Visitors so far, the pages they read and the page each one is on now, beside a live world map.

  2. The morning mail

Yesterday's figures after each morning's run, and the week on Mondays. Held back if a day did not add up.

  3. Who got in touch

Contact forms and bookings beside the visits: Calendly, Cal.com, or your WordPress forms through a no-code plugin.

  4. What changed

Insights lists what is working, what dropped, and what is new or gone, biggest first.

[04] set up once

Simple website analytics set-up: one command, or we do it for you

On your own server, one command connects the log and tests itself. Hosted Skald is set up for you within one working day.

Someone else looks after your site? Mail them the set-up pack, or send a private link with that one task and every step filled in. They need no sign-in.

[05] AI and your business

Is ChatGPT sending you customers? An alert the first time it does

Skald sends an alert on the first visit ever that followed a link in an AI answer, with the time and the page it landed on. After that, a page's first AI citation gets its own alert too. These start once Skald holds 28 days of history, so a new install does not call every citation a first.

Some apps hide where a visitor came from, so AI visits are a floor. A direct visit to a page an assistant read minutes before is marked likely, and kept apart.

[06] what it does not do

The limits of Skald for a small business, said plainly

Good to know before you start.

What it does not do

  • On Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or Webflow there is no server log, so only the script tag works: people yes, AI crawlers and bots no.
  • Visits are an upper bound on people. One person on a phone and a laptop is two browsers.
  • No ad spend and no Google Ads link. Keep Google Analytics if you run ads.
  • The privacy notice text Skald writes is a starting point, not legal advice.
  • The WordPress forms plugin was checked against stubbed WordPress hooks, not every theme and plugin.

questions

Website analytics for small business FAQ

Straight answers, including what Skald does not do.

Do I need to add code to my website?

Not when your site runs on a server that writes an access log, as nginx and Apache do. Skald reads that log, so nothing goes in your pages. The optional script tag adds in-page events, such as form steps and bookings.

Does it work on Shopify, Wix or Squarespace?

Only through the script tag, because those hosts give you no server log. The tag counts people and their clicks, but it never sees AI crawlers, AI fetches or bots, since none of them run a script.

Does Skald need cookies?

Not to count visits: the log already holds every request. Signing in to the dashboard uses one cookie for your own session. The log holds IP addresses, and you choose to keep them in full, shortened or not at all. Skald writes a starting text for your privacy notice from those settings, which is not legal advice.

How long does set-up take?

On your own server, one command, then a test that runs by itself. On hosted Skald we set your site up for you within one working day, with a 30-day free trial and no card. You can also mail the set-up pack to whoever looks after your site.

Will it tell me if my site goes down?

Yes. Site alerts cover the site going down, logging stopping, bursts of server errors, a surge of not-found pages and a drop in traffic. A heartbeat every 5 minutes shows uptime and outages.
