Content grouping: page groups, with their past days filled in
Content grouping that does not start from zero. Name a part of your site, and Skald counts it from the next run and fills its past days from the raw log, each one checked.
Content grouping means seeing one part of a website on its own, such as the blog, the docs or the pages in one language. In Skald a page group is a name, the path it starts with and any paths to leave out; each group gets the same figures as the whole site. Part of Skald features.

[01] one line each
Write a page group in one line
A name, the path it starts with, and any paths to leave out, separated by a bar. Paths match the start of the address's path, capital letters counted, never the part after ?. Pick an example.
pick an example
Blog: every page under /blog/
Every page whose path starts with /blog/, and /blog itself. The group gets its own pages, sources, countries and AI figures, counted the same way as the whole site.
"GET /blog/server-logs/" → Blog · "GET /pricing/" → not in Blog
Canada, without the French pages
The Canada pages under /ca/, but not the French ones under /ca/fr/. Several paths to leave out are separated by spaces.
"GET /ca/pricing/" → Canada · "GET /ca/fr/tarifs/" → not in Canada
A section of guides on its own
Every page under /security/. Useful for a docs area, a help centre or a set of guides you want to watch apart from the product pages.
"GET /security/php2shell/" → Security pages
Everything except the blog and Canada
An empty path means the whole site; the paths after the second bar are left out. So this group is every page except the blog and the Canada pages.
"GET /pricing/" → Rest of the site · "GET /blog/" → not in it
[02] with their past
Past days filled from the raw log, and audited
Most tools start a new group on the day you make it. Skald counts the new group again for every whole day your raw log still holds.
Save
Fill past days for the new groups is ticked. Press Save, or untick it and use the button later.
Fill
The new or changed groups are counted again in the background: "Filling 9 days… 4 of 9".
Audit
Each day is checked by a second, separate count. A day the two disagree on is held back and not shown.
Done
"Done: 9 days filled, all audited". Days older than the raw log say not recorded for this group, never 0.
One fill runs at a time on a server, and owners and admins can start one. A renamed group counts as a new one. A removed group leaves the Page group list, and nothing needs counting again.
[03] pick it in the top bar
A page group follows you across the dashboard
The Page group list sits beside the period and reads All pages until you pick one. The group stays in the address, so a link opens the same view.
In saved views and reports
A saved view keeps its page group. The report builder takes a page group with the tabs, period and filters, and a shell report or export can be run for one group.
Whole site only, said so
Real time always covers the whole site, and says so on a page group. Today against yesterday at this hour says not recorded there: it is counted for the whole site.

[04] host names
One site, up to 50 host names
Host names are the names a site answers to. List from 1 to 50 of them, and their visits count as one site.
A separate site, with its own settings, logo and page assets, lives beside it in the same install. Owners and admins change host names, views and the time zone; changes apply from the next run.
[05] time zones
Days in the site's time zone, times in yours
Days are counted midnight to midnight in the site's own zone. Times can show in the site's zone, your own zone or UTC, from the You menu.
3 h ago (18 Oct 13:43 EDT) · how long ago, then the moment, the same way everywhere
Site's zone
The default. Every day, chart and report is cut at the site's own midnight.
Your zone
Times shown in your own zone for a team across the world. The days stay the site's.
UTC
For matching against a server log or another tool that works in UTC.
[06] what it does not do
The limits of page groups, said plainly
A group is only as old as the raw log behind it.
What it does not do
- Past days can be filled only while the raw log holds them, 14 days on most servers. Earlier days say not recorded for this group.
- Up to 20 groups a site. A path matches the start of the address, capital letters counted, never a query string.
- A renamed group counts as a new one, so its days are counted again under the new name.
- Real time always covers the whole site.
- Host name and time zone changes apply from the next run. Days already stored are not counted again.

Content grouping FAQ
Straight answers, including what Skald does not do.
How do I make a page group in Skald?
In Settings › Sites › Views, write one group per line: its name, the path it starts with, and any paths to leave out, separated by a bar. For example, Blog | /blog/ is every page under /blog/. Up to 20 groups. Pick one in the Page group list in the top bar.
Does a new page group start from zero?
No. When you save a new group, Skald counts its past days again from the server's raw log, in the background, for every whole day the raw log still holds, and shows how far it is. Each filled day is checked by a second, separate count, and a day the two disagree on is held back.
How far back can a page group go?
As far as the raw log your server keeps, 14 days on most servers. Earlier days show as not recorded for this group, never as 0, and the settings box says from which day.
Can one site have several host names?
Yes. A site can have 1 to 50 host names, such as www.example.com and example.com, and they count as one site.
Which time zone does Skald count days in?
Days are counted midnight to midnight in the site's own time zone, set in Settings › Sites. You can show times in the site's zone, your own zone or UTC from the You menu; the days stay the site's.
